Advocates to Lawmakers: "Don't Drop the Ball"
Advocates in Southern Illinois delivered more than 10,000 balls to three legislators, telling them they must not drop the ball when it comes to children and families. The balls represent the children who could be affected by debilitating budget cuts due to the lack of a revenue stream to protect vital health, education and human services. Read the full story. Larry Joseph, Voices' Budget & Tax Policy Initiative director, discussed the state of education on City Voices, a weekly public affairs radio program. The segment, produced by Catalyst Chicago, focused on how school districts face a host of challenges to teach children the skills they will need to succeed in the 21st century. Joseph, along with Advance Illinois' Robin Steans, talked about how Illinois needs to improve its learning standards, develop better assessments and institute more after-school programs to augment what children learn in the classroom.
